Just before the moon blots out the sun altogether in a total eclipse, a ring appears, for less than a minter, with bright pearl like beads around the edge. These are formed from sunlight shining through the irregularities made by mountains, craters and valleys on the moon's surface. The beads can be deep red at times and were named after Francis Baily, who described the phenomenon to the Royal Astronomical Society in December 1836. However, they were noted by Halley as long ago as 1715. I used in camera multiple exposure to link together three different images to highlight this extraordinary but very brief phase of the total eclipse. The image reminded me of interlocking Rosary beads.
