Description
Belfast city centre, Northern Ireland, during the Christmas celebrations. I was photographing the illuminated Helter Skelter as I do every year when I noticed another photographer walking away after capturing the same scene. The rain had left the cobbled street covered in water, creating a striking reflection of the Helter Skelter, the surrounding buildings and the photographer himself. I deliberately composed the image low to the ground, using the puddle as a natural mirror and positioning the photographer centrally to create symmetry between the real scene and its reflection. The contrast between the warm Christmas lights, deep shadows and vivid colours helped emphasise the atmosphere of Belfast at Christmas. My intention was to capture more than the Christmas lights themselves — to tell the story of a photographer becoming an unexpected part of the photograph. The result is a reflection not only in the water, but of the photographer’s role in capturing the moment.
