Description
This image shows an ash plume rising at dawn during a documented period of volcanic activity at Mount Bromo. Early light moves across the surrounding volcanic landscape, bringing together a dark foreground cone, layers of distant ridges, low cloud and the heavy movement of ash above the crater. The contrast between warm sunrise light and the weight of the smoke gives the scene its tension. My intention was to show an active landscape at its most fragile and dramatic, where the calm of dawn is interrupted by the force still moving beneath the surface. Camera settings: 1/500 sec, f/2.8, ISO 200, 70mm.
