Description
In Vardø, high above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, I stepped through the open door of a dilapidated building and discovered this scene on one of its old windows. Outside, kittiwakes were silhouetted against the soft light of the Arctic sun shortly before midnight, their shapes diffused by years of dirt and weathering on the glass. I photographed them from inside, allowing the imperfect window to transform the birds into ghost-like shadows. What caught my attention was the contrast between the lively colony outside and the stillness and decay within — a fleeting Arctic moment that felt more like a painting than a photograph.
