A common sandpiper worked its way across the backs of a pod of hippos resting in the shallows, picking at insects on their skin. The hippos were dozy and did not react. What drew me was the juxtaposition of scale — with the frame filled entirely by hippo, there is nothing to measure the bird against except its own shadow. Photographed from a vehicle at distance; the animals were undisturbed throughout.
