Description
Photographed at water level on Lake Kerkini in northern Greece, this Dalmatian pelican drifted slowly towards our boat as the first light reached the lake. A gentle breeze lifted its feathers, creating the striking symmetry around its body, while the low angle placed the bird against the dark, layered mountains beyond. I waited for it to look directly towards me, bringing its intense eye and vivid red pouch into the centre of the composition. The calm blue water and surrounding shadows helped isolate the pelican, capturing both the elegance and slightly prehistoric character of this remarkable species.
