During Turkey’s National Sovereignty and Children’s Day celebrations in Istanbul, I noticed a man reading a newspaper on the ferry. The face dominating the front page seemed to mirror the features and expression of the passenger sitting behind him. Surrounded by Turkish flags and portraits of Atatürk, this accidental resemblance brought everyday life, national identity and the news together within a single frame. I waited until all the elements aligned and made the photograph.
