Description
Inspired by a host of firework shots on social media from the night before, I wanted to have a go myself. I'd found this spot months earlier while shooting local tourism photos for the council, so when the Bournemouth Air Show fireworks came round, I knew just the place for it, despite being nearly a mile from the display. I set up on a light stand instead of a proper tripod, just for the extra height, dialling in a 5 second exposure after plenty of test shots. When the grand finale started, I held my breath and prayed the wind wouldn't blur the shot. It held long enough to catch these two bursts directly above the pier, gold trails spilling into the water below, the hillside full of people watching as the promenade traced the shoreline beneath them. I'm in awe of how the smoke zigzags across the sky, creating leading lines to the fireworks. I certainly owe my luck to the wind that day.
