Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Teejay is one of the last remaining super tuskers of the Amboseli ecosystem. My intention was to create a portrait that that conveyed not only Teejay's extraordinary physical presence, but also a the sense of awe and privilege I felt in his company. As the light gradually faded, I waited for the moment that captured both his character and immense presence. I used a wide angle lens from a deliberately low angle allowing Teejay to dominate the frame. This perspective emphasised his scale, height and magnificent tusks. The warm, fading light behind him added to the atmosphere and a sense of timelessness. As darkness approached and we finally had to leave for camp, this image became more than just a portrait for me, it was a visual record of a deeply personal, once in a lifetime encounter with one of Africa's great remaining giants.
