Produced for Harajuku Kitchen, a Japanese restaurant based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The intention was to create a cosy, winter vibe throughout the shoot, for the run up to Christmas, 2025. This used a single light setup with a parabolic softbox at a low angle for the extended soft shadows. The beautifully presented dishes and their exceptional quality ingredients produced punchy contrast and colours, which were able to be maintained throughout the moody atmosphere. Contrasting Katsu is aptly named, thanks to its stark contrast in texture, notably the crispy, breadcrumb-coated chicken breast against the accompanying katsu curry sauce, which appears smooth and buttery. Additionally, unity is achieved throughout the image's warm tones, contrasted by the blue bowl and fresh, green salad. The rustic table also provides a contrast with the precision and excellency of the presented dish. Compositionally, this image sits you at the table and uses the leading lines of the table edge, as well as the depth-of-field, to draw your eye directly to the food, cementing the dish as the hero with the supporting cocktail.
