Description
2nd Lieutenant Alec Goschen troops the colours of the Grenedier Guards during the Colonel's Review, the final rehearsal before the Trooping the Colour ceremony in front of the Royal Family. Being chosen as the ensign, the junior officer to troop the colours, is both an honour and a trial. It requires substantial core strength to keep the flag and pole, which weighs around 5.5kg, upright and steady for the full 2-hour ceremony. Not only this, but on this particular day, the weather lurched from bright sun one moment to biblical levels of rain the next. Whilst the synchronised movements of the soldiers is an impressive display, I wanted to show the individuals. With this image, I was able to get a very close-up shot of 2nd Lieutenant Goschen, his eyes almost entirely obscured by the bearskin hat but visible enough to show his expression, both determined and tired. With an event of this scale, with so much happening, I wanted to find a way to bring it down to a more relatable level, to humanise the anonymous mass of red coated soldiers.
