Description
Photographed in Varanasi, India, this image documents an unstaged moment of preparation within a traditional practice of taking on the appearance of Shiva. The close framing focuses on an unstaged moment of preparation, with the brush, hands and direct gaze showing the transformation as it happens. Natural directional light keeps the scene intimate, while the blue tones of the face paint and surroundings create a unified atmosphere. My intention was to show the quiet concentration before performance, rather than the finished spectacle. Camera settings: 1/125 sec, f/2.8, ISO 640, 48mm.
